plicit behaviours, narratives, contexts and intangible experiences form our field of research. To articulate the hidden relationship among people + space + objects. This relationship is what we are after.

The nature of this research thus, relies a lot on negating the monumental object, to find a clearing where we seek to understand and articulate our observations of the everyday, drawing the quiet and the quotidian back into our sensibilities. Projects offer propositions as to how we can live in a ‘lesser’ environment, how can the experience of light move beyond the image of a lamp, or how the simple act of arrangement can bring about a renewed perspective of our immediate surroundings.

We hope that the intent of this programme will benefit from our research into all phenomena, encouraging experimental concepts that are not limited by linear developments within the academic and commercial design practice.

Recognizing the need to correct and renew our feelings towards the vernacular hidden within an environment that is so overly familiar to us,  Atelier HOKO took the opportunity to embark upon an excursion into new territories of unknowing. Unlearning to learn, we are slowly losing all knowledge of what design is or what a designer should do. Instead, we believe that to review the meaning of today’s design practice in particular, we need to curb two things: (1)the destiny of objects being mere aesthetic artifacts that are consequences of an individual’s idiosyncratic, self-glorifying intent, and (2)our rapidly regressing senses due to an overflow of these glorified designs that are only capable of being insignificant ‘fillers’ in our environment.

We see our search for the peripheral conditions as an exercise to cultivate an open-ness; where living becomes a sensorial event unfettered by any pre-conceived notions. When speaking of the term 'peripheral', we really are talking about conditions and sensations that  escapes our primary interface with the environment. One can also consider it as a pre-design conditioning, where the study of im-
